OpenAI Acquires Orchestra Bio as Voice AI and Local Agents Advance
PLUS: Muse Glimmer gets a technical report, MiniMax boosts Flash performance, and new research tests AI agents in real-world operations.

Yes, that Arnold Schwarzenegger.
He has a newsletter on beehiiv. So do Codie Sanchez, Jay Shetty, David Begnaud, Colin & Samir, and Joanna Stern.
They could publish just about anywhere. They chose beehiiv to build a direct connection with the people who want to hear from them most. And you can do the same, whether youβre world-famous or just at the start of your plan for world domination.
Today:
OpenAI acquires Orchestra Bio to connect drug research with development workflows
Voxtral 3 introduces multilingual voice models and a real-time agent SDK
Perplexity Computer can run entirely locally on supported Macs
Meta publishes the technical report for its previously released Muse Glimmer model
MiniMax M3.1 Flash claims much faster inference and lower agentic costs
AI Moves From Answers to Real Workflows Across Science and Devices
The latest announcements extend AI agents into new kinds of work. OpenAI is connecting life-sciences reasoning with drug-development coordination, Mistral is combining voice models and tool use for real-time conversations, and Perplexity is bringing planning and execution fully onto a Mac.
The common shift is toward systems that do more than generate responses. They handle workflows, interact with applications and work with sensitive data, raising practical questions about access, reliability and how their outputs are verified.
OpenAI announced its acquisition of Orchestra Bio, a platform for managing complex drug-development programs. The company plans to combine Orchestra's team and workflow technology with Rosalind, its system of models and scientific tools for life sciences. The aim is to help researchers connect laboratory findings with the planning and coordination needed to advance potential treatments.
Orchestra helps scientists and program managers track studies, coordinate internal teams and external partners, and identify how delays affect a broader drug program. OpenAI gives the example of a failed manufacturing batch that could disrupt a clinical-trial schedule: an agent can gather affected activities and possible responses for human review.
The combination adds workflow coordination to GPT-Rosalind and Rosalind Workbench, which support scientific reasoning, data analysis and experiment planning. OpenAI also points to partnerships with Novo Nordisk and Moderna as part of its broader life-sciences work.
Mistral released Voxtral 3, a family of speech recognition and voice generation models alongside a voice agent SDK. The SDK brings listening, reasoning, tool calls and spoken replies into a real-time streaming workflow, targeting support lines, virtual assistants and other applications that must understand and act on spoken requests.
Voxtral Transcribe 3 supports more than 50 languages, including all 24 official EU languages, with speaker diarization and context biasing for technical terms. Mistral offers Small and Mini transcription variants, as well as a real-time Mini model for streaming use. Voxtral Speech 3 adds expressive voice output with multilingual and dialect support.
The company reports transcription and speech-quality gains in its own evaluations. Its launch documentation lists Voxtral Mini Transcribe 3 batch pricing from $0.0035 per audio minute, with separate pricing for real-time transcription and voice generation.
The models are available through Mistral's API and Studio, including EU-hosted endpoints. Organizations seeking stronger control over audio processing can discuss self-deployment, which is distinct from instant public access to the hosted services.
Perplexity launched a mode that runs the Computer agent and its AI model entirely on a supported Apple silicon Mac. Instead of sending private files to a remote model for planning and task execution, the local mode handles those steps on the device, with permission to work across apps such as Notes, Messages, Mail and Numbers.
The Mac app offers two modes. Fully Local keeps planning, reasoning and file processing on the machine, while Hybrid Compute can combine cloud-based reasoning with local operations. Users can explicitly authorize cloud access for current information, browser tasks or connected applications when needed.
The local mode initially supports Qwen 3.6 and PPLX Pro, a post-trained Qwen variant. Perplexity recommends at least 36 GB of unified memory and says the feature is available to Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers through the latest Mac app.
Perplexity says code and tool execution use isolated sandbox environments with controlled permissions. Keeping the model local can reduce unnecessary data transfers, but users still need to authorize access carefully and select cloud mode when an operation requires online services.
π§ RESEARCH
BrainLoRA uses low-rank adapters and lightweight readouts to predict fMRI responses to visual and audio stimuli from large multimodal AI models. The researchers evaluate nine backbones, scaling up to 104 billion parameters, and use a causal single-pass feature extraction method to reduce repeated computation. Their ensemble of more than 200 adapted models ranked first on the public Algonauts post-challenge leaderboard at the time of writing; the results concern brain-encoding benchmarks, not direct decoding of people's private thoughts.
OR-License evaluates coding agents on 31 de-identified operations-research engagements spanning ten industrial situations, using client materials rather than prewritten mathematical formulations. The benchmark examines whether the resulting optimization models are feasible and useful when deployment constraints are considered. The strongest evaluated configuration reached 88.39% strict feasibility and 0.87 deployment-adjusted quality, showing that impressive objective values do not guarantee expert-level, usable solutions.
EgoXperience presents a unified approach to estimating camera motion, surrounding geometry, hands and object movement in one world coordinate frame from first-person video. Its annotation pipeline produced EgoX-Data-6M, around 50 hours of labeled activity, and the EgoX model combines the predictions in a single forward pass. Against the strongest evaluated baselines, the authors report reductions in camera, hand and depth errors of 68.9%, 65.6% and 42.9%, respectively, although the tests are controlled reconstruction evaluations rather than proof of real-world robot performance.

Meta published a technical report for Muse Glimmer 30B, the open-weight agent model it originally released in August, documenting architecture, training and quantization methods. The model combines text and visual inputs and is designed for local tool use and multistep tasks, with four-bit versions targeting a single consumer GPU.
MiniMax released M3.1 Flash, reporting nearly three times faster online inference and a 70% reduction in overall agentic-task costs compared with the previous generation. The company lists 73.7% on DeepSWE v1.1, 61.7 on OSWorld V2 and 82% on CyberGym, alongside API pricing of $0.15 per million input tokens and $0.60 per million output tokens. The model is available through the MiniMax API, M Plan and MiniMax Code, with weights scheduled for a later release.
The Information reported that Anthropic is preparing a model that can infer a user's broader goals from limited instructions, citing a person who has used it. The report describes more creative problem-solving and reasoning than commercially available Anthropic models, but does not establish the model family, public launch date or final capabilities.
In research published August 18, Anthropic reported using Claude Mythos Preview and Opus 4.8 with specialized protein tools to design binders against 15 targets, with successful binders identified for 14. Depending on the setup, 22%β35% of individual designs bound successfully in laboratory tests, versus the typical 10%β15% comparison cited in the study; the same report also discusses Claude Opus 5 assisting with analytical chemistry.
Arda, founded by former OpenAI research chief Bob McGrew, raised $230 million in financing at a reported $1.5 billion valuation, according to CNBC. The company builds AI software to help manufacturing engineers plan and adapt factory assembly lines, and McGrew said its technology has already been deployed with Anduril.
Citrini Research described a three-month collaboration using an Anthropic research model to design novel proteins and prepare candidates for laboratory synthesis and testing. In one campaign, the team reported deploying more than 300 subagents on more than 300 concurrent GPUs to generate and evaluate candidate proteins before sending them for physical validation.
